Garden Design Hitchin

I was invited to a new property just outside of Hitchin by a lovely couple who were downsizing. They had purchased the show home on a small development of a handful of stunning newly built houses.

As part of my garden audit, I noticed that the garden had been planted with perennials and shrubs arranged somewhat randomly around the border edges. Although it was a reasonable size garden, it lacked imagination, which my clients wanted to address.

Therefore, we decided that I would create a comprehensive garden planting plan. They didn't require any further hard landscaping since the patio area was a good size and well proportioned to the house and garden.

I conducted a thorough garden audit of the plants that were in situ, noting which ones could be repurposed in the new garden planting plan. I also measured the garden in full, allowing me to create a soft landscape design that would work beautifully within the space.

The brief was to design a garden that didn't reveal itself all at once, a landscape that took visitors on a journey with the plants taking center stage.

I developed several concept sketches that I reviewed with the clients. These sketches were instrumental in helping them visualize how the garden could be transformed, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the landscape rather than simply viewing it from their kitchen window.

I created an additional seating area with a large wooden bench that had been lovingly used in their previous garden. This space was positioned to catch the last rays of sunshine at the end of the day, enhancing the overall landscape design.

During the garden audit, it became clear that the quality of the soil had been compromised. As part of the garden planting plan, we decided to remove the compacted soil and replace it with top-quality topsoil and soil conditioner.

Conducting a garden audit made a significant difference to the success of the newly planted flower beds, which are absolutely thriving. The overall landscape design I created is soft and informal, featuring deep curved flower beds that allow for a varied palette of planting in my garden planting plan.

“Faced with a blank patch in our new house, we had no idea how to start a new garden despite having gardened for so many years. It was Sarah who gave us the ideas that created a structure for a charming new layout that invites a visit and creates the wow factor”
